Finally I got reply from Numega Tech support. They said it is a firewall issue and sent me a new Symbol Retriever to try. Guess what it didn’twork. However, at least they pointed me into the right direction by saying that SymChk from the WinDbg package (free download vom
www.microsoft.com
, use google) can download symbolsas well.
So I simply used SymChk to download the whole symbol set for my OS (SymChk can recurse through directories, very nice feature!). After that I fired up Symbol Retriever, setthe download path to where I downloaded the symbols with SymChk before, klicked on Get Symbols and Symbol Retriever found the already downloaded files and translated them forSoftICE.
One more note: It seems that one of the recent patches changes boot.ini back to default options. I had to edit the /NoExecute= switch again to AlwaysOff (default is OptIn).After a reboot, SoftICE was working properly again.

Also, the cost per MB for them continues to cut down lately, which is not the case for floppies andCDROMs .
And the most important thing is that you can use bootable USB Flash Disk almost everywhere, on any PC that has USB port. Are you going torepair your PC at your work without CDROMs, floppies or other media? No problems anymore. Or you have a laptop but without a CDROM drive? Even if with aCDROM drive, you can’t work with it for a long time: boot device is accessed quite often, and battery power is obviously not enough to supply laser fora long time. Perhaps you are home user with a desktop PC <javascript:void(0);>. And you are ready to repair it with your favoritebootable CDROM, OK. But what if CDROM drive fails? FlashBootis a tool that makes USB disks bootable. It was specially designed to work with USB Flash devices. It is used to reformat flash disk (that’s optional)and transfer system files to it. You have many options for your choice:
convert BartPE bootable CDROM to bootable USB disk
transfer DOS kernel only(you may get the files from installed Windows 9x, from Windows 9x setup folder, or use builtin FreeDOS)
convert floppy disk to USB Flash disk (adiskette or an image file may be used)
convert a bootable CDROM to USB Flash disk (again images are supported). There are some technical difficultieswith supporting any type of CDROM here, see details below. But there should be no troubles with the most real cases. You may convert Knoppix and EBCD,for instance.
